-Normal cat tendency:
Right from a very young age, cats start licking and sucking. In fact, research has proven that cats who are separated from their original family in the young age tend to lick and suck more as compared to the cats who have grown up in a normal family. This is because cats lick to state their association with their owners. It is a symbol of their love.
When your cat is licking you, it means that the cat is entirely comfortable in your presence and the cat actually likes being with you. When you’re comforting your cat by moving your hand over the cat, then also your cat can start licking you and this means that the cat is enjoying your company.
If your cat is licking other cats, like if you’re having multiple cats and if one cat licks other cat, that is a way of bonding among cats. It is actually a pretty normal behavior if the cat is comfortable with the other cat. The parts of the body where the cat can lick other cat would be near the ears or on the top of the cat.
-Cats are licking their young ones:
Cats are often seen licking their young ones to soothe them and to let them know about their presence. Very young cats do not develop an eyesight until they are a few days old and therefore the licking of the mother cat tells them that the mother cat is around.
Right at a very young age cats associate licking with affection because of the licking of their mother cats and therefore this behaviour of the cats continues into the adult age as well and therefore if you’re having a cat as a pet and if your cat is trying to show its affection towards you then it would start licking you as well. This is the natural tendency of your cat because it has experienced the same in quite a young age.
Cats associate grooming with licking because the mother cats always lick their kittens to groom them and therefore if your cat is also licking you then that means the cat is trying to groom you. While our grooming is much more different as compared to the cats but cats associate grooming with licking and therefore whenever they are trying to groom and show their affection towards us, they start licking us. Also, grooming enhances the social acceptability and the closeness which our cats have to us.
A cat licking you to groom, is actually an expression that the cat is comfortable around you and the cat loves you and the cat is trying to show their affection towards you.
-Taste of your skin:
In very rare cases cats actually like the taste of your skin and this is particularly the case if you have applied something like a shower gel or cream or lotion on your skin but you need to ensure that it is safe for the cat to lick and only in that case you can allow the cats to look.

Depending on the reason for which the cat is licking you, you can easily teach it to not to lick you without being quite harsh.
-Provide them with a comfortable alternative:
In most of the cases, if you let the cat be with you but away from your hands or face then the cat would prefer that comfortable spot instead of continuously licking you like when you’re sleeping instead of making the cat be near your face, you can provided with a comfortable blanket near you but not exactly near your face and this would ensure that the cat is resting with you but not continuously licking you.
-Use other fragrances:
As we mentioned above in some of the cases, the licking of the cat is due to the cream or ointment or shower gel which you have used and therefore in such a case changing the fragrance of that particular ointment or cream would distract the cat and the cat would not be licking you.
