Why does my cat lick me?

Cats are one of the most adorable pets which you can have. A lot of people who have cats do not quite understand some of the things which cats do.

Some of the behavior of cats can be easily understood whereas, some other actions like why do cats get scared so easily? How can cats jump so high? These things are often not understood even by the cat owners, but there is a reasoning behind each and every behavior of the cat. Today, we would be discussing about why does cats often lick their younger ones as well as their owners.

Licking is one of them. Normally your cat can lick you on your hands and on the feet and this behavior is actually pretty frequent and cats. It is not easy for the cat owners to understand why the cat is licking you.

Many cat owners ask why does my cat lick me? Cat owners are trying to decipher whether there is some meaning in the cat licking you. Is it trying to tell you something?

There are quite a few things which a cat can convey with the help of licking and also there are multiple reasons why a cat licks. We would be going into them below.

Why does my cat lick me?

-Normal cat tendency:

Right from a very young age, cats start licking and sucking. In fact, research has proven that cats who are separated from their original family in the young age tend to lick and suck more as compared to the cats who have grown up in a normal family. This is because cats lick to state their association with their owners. It is a symbol of their love.

When your cat is licking you, it means that the cat is entirely comfortable in your presence and the cat actually likes being with you. When you’re comforting your cat by moving your hand over the cat, then also your cat can start licking you and this means that the cat is enjoying your company.

-Bonding:
If your cat is licking other cats, like if you’re having multiple cats and if one cat licks other cat, that is a way of bonding among cats. It is actually a pretty normal behavior if the cat is comfortable with the other cat. The parts of the body where the cat can lick other cat would be near the ears or on the top of the cat.

-Cats are licking their young ones:

Cats are often seen licking their young ones to soothe them and to let them know about their presence. Very young cats do not develop an eyesight until they are a few days old and therefore the licking of the mother cat tells them that the mother cat is around.

Cats associate grooming with licking because the mother cats always lick their kittens to groom them and therefore if your cat is also licking you then that means the cat is trying to groom you. While our grooming is much more different as compared to the cats but cats associate grooming with licking and therefore whenever they are trying to groom and show their affection towards us, they start licking us. Also, grooming enhances the social acceptability and the closeness which our cats have to us.

A cat licking you to groom, is actually an expression that the cat is comfortable around you and the cat loves you and the cat is trying to show their affection towards you.

-Taste of your skin:

In very rare cases cats actually like the taste of your skin and this is particularly the case if you have applied something like a shower gel or cream or lotion on your skin but you need to ensure that it is safe for the cat to lick and only in that case you can allow the cats to look.

Stopping the licking of cats:

In some of the cases, the licking of the cats might not be comfortable for you and in such a situation, you might be trying to find out the ways in which you can stop the licking of cat. Depending on the reason for which the cat is licking you, you can easily teach it to not to lick you without being quite harsh.

-Provide them with a comfortable alternative:

In most of the cases, if you let the cat be with you but away from your hands or face then the cat would prefer that comfortable spot instead of continuously licking you like when you’re sleeping instead of making the cat be near your face, you can provided with a comfortable blanket near you but not exactly near your face and this would ensure that the cat is resting with you but not continuously licking you.

-Use other fragrances:

As we mentioned above in some of the cases, the licking of the cat is due to the cream or ointment or shower gel which you have used and therefore in such a case changing the fragrance of that particular ointment or cream would distract the cat and the cat would not be licking you.

-Teaching the cat:

There are plenty of cat teaching courses and cat teaching tutorials on the Internet which would help you in teaching, the cat, to not to lick you. You need to ensure that you are teaching the cat in a proper way and not just scaring the cat away.

-Giving the cat something more interesting to do:

If you want to keep the cat away from licking then you can start playing with the cat whenever the cat is trying to lick you. This would keep the attention of the cat away from licking you and therefore the cat would be busy in some other work like playing with the ball or playing with his or her favorite toy and it would not be licking you.

So, as you can see there are a lot of reasons as to why a cat can lick you and if you do not want the cat to lick you then you can stop this behavior of the cat as well by using some of the methods which we have mentioned above to stop the cat from licking you.
