Most of you might not have heard about the gag reflex but it is a very important mechanism in our body which helps us in carrying out our day to day activities like eating food and drinking water in a normal manner.
For those of you who do not have not heard about the gag reflex before, it is a mechanism just before our throat which helps us in ensuring that unless and until we precisely need, the food or water in our mouth does not enter the throat or the lungs.
This mechanism sometimes malfunctions as well specially when the end of the mouth this touched or this can also happen when you are in the hyper- sensitive state.
The common occurrences of gagging occurring are when you brush your teeth or go to a dentist when the end of the mouth is most likely to be touched. When this happen gagging occurs which can be quite unnerving.
In order to avoid the gagging from occurring you need to practice some exercises which would ensure that the gag reflex mechanism is functioning properly and there is no gagging.
How to get rid of gagging due to gag reflex?
-In most of the cases when you are under stress are when you’re anxious, the gagging occurs and the gag reflex mechanism malfunctions. In this state, the end of your mouth is very sensitive due to which the gag reflex mechanism malfunctions. In order to avoid this, you just had to remain calm and relaxed and the sensitivity had the end of your mouth would be reduced and the gag reflex mechanism would be working as it should be.
-If you’re sure that the end of the mouth would be touched multiple times during the coming days like when you have regular visits to the dentist then it might be a good idea to train your gag reflex mechanism to react properly when it is being touched and do not result in gagging. This sounds very difficult but it is actually very easy.
You need to just practice a small exercise a few times a day to train the gag reflex mechanism to function properly when the end of the mouth is being touched. The exercise is to 1st to lift the back of your tongue and touch it in the upper part of your mouth.
Then you had to breathe through the nose but you had to keep your mouth open. You had to be in this position for a longer period of time and ideally for as long as you can. While your mouth is open the tongue should be in the same position that is the back of the tongue should be touching the upper part of the mouth.
You had to practice this exercise multiple times a day so that you can train your gag reflex mechanism to react properly in case it is triggered by the touching of the end of the mouth.
-The next option which you have in order to train your gag reflex mechanism to keep on working properly is to desensitise your mouth because when your mouth is not that sensitive than the gagging would not be occurring each and every time the end of the mouth this touched.
For this you might be needing a soft toothbrush and you had to rub it after the last treats are there and you had to do but gently so that you can train the gag reflex mechanism to not act abruptly whenever something touches the end of the mouth. This can also be done with the help of that the desensitisation spray which is used by the dentist and which is available over the counter as well.
This spray would decrease the sensitivity of your mouth for at least one hour after you apply the spray. You should not be using it to frequently. Once in awhile usage is fine and you can easily get the prescription from your dentist as well in case it is needed. The instructions to use the spray are listed on the box of the spray and therefore you can use it easily.
-If you want to train your gag reflex mechanism for a longer period of time then what you need to do is to slowly and steadily start touching the brush at the further end of your mouth to stop triggering the gag reflex mechanism abruptly which causes gagging.
You cannot directly does the toothbrush at the far end of the mouth because that would cause gagging and therefore you had to just start first with the area just after the teeth and then day by day you have to touch the toothbrush more and more further so that you are able to train the gag reflex mechanism to work properly without gagging.
In order to do this the toothbrush which you would be using should be very soft so that there is no adverse impact in the area of the skin which is directly behind the teeth because this area is already very sensitive and if the toothbrush is too hard then it would adversely impact the area and there would be rashes are some other problem on the skin just behind the teeth.
Gagging can be completely avoided by training your mouth and the gag reflex mechanism to work properly in case the end of the mouth is touched and the methods which we have mentioned for training the mouth are not too hard either and you just need to practice a few times and once you have done that practice it would get pretty easy for you to avoid gagging completely even when the end of the mouth this touched repeatedly.
The gag reflex mechanism is designed in a way so that it can work according to the voluntary actions which you are doing and not in such a way that it gets triggered abruptly to cause gagging.
These few exercises would help you in ensuring that you make the gag reflex mechanism work in a way as it was designed to be and you would not have to suffer from gagging ever again since you would have trained the gag mechanism properly to work as it should be working.
